Microsoft Work IQ — Plugin Marketplace
The official Microsoft Work IQ plugin collection for GitHub Copilot ✨
Extend the power of GitHub Copilot with Work IQ plugins — MCP servers, skills, and tools that connect AI assistants to your Microsoft 365 data.
⚠️ Public Preview: Features and APIs may change.
To access Microsoft 365 tenant data, the WorkIQ CLI and MCP Server need to be consented to permissions that require administrative rights on the tenant. On first access, a consent dialog appears. If you are not an administrator, contact your tenant administrator to grant access.
For Tenant Administrators: See the Tenant Administrator Enablement Guide for detailed instructions on granting admin consent, including a quick one-click consent URL.
For more information, see Microsoft's User and Admin Consent Overview.
📋 Prerequisites
The workiq plugin connects to a hosted MCP endpoint; it does not need a local
Node.js runtime or launch an NPX server. Tenant consent and appropriate Microsoft
365 licensing are still required.
Node.js 18+ is needed for the separate local WorkIQ CLI and CLI-backed
productivity skills below. Optional WorkIQ Files CLI transfers require
Node.js 20+, separate installation and explicit permission before accepting
the Files CLI EULA. Other plugins have their own prerequisites.
Migrating from workiq-preview
Stable 3.0.0 replaces stable 2.0.2 with retrieve-first evidence gathering
and local synthesis, explicit Copilot/named-agent delegation, progressive
guidance and exact entity operations. Retrieval availability remains
tenant-dependent; installation does not enable it, and missing retrieval never
silently falls back to ask. See the stable plugin guide.
The public workiq-preview package is retired. Remove an existing installation
before installing/updating stable, since older preview skills claim
precedence over stable for overlapping requests:
copilot plugin uninstall workiq-preview
copilot plugin install workiq@work-iq
Restart your session afterward. Registry removal does not uninstall an existing
plugin or replace instructions already loaded in a running session.
Future WorkIQ development preview remains internal; this GitHub marketplace
publishes promoted stable WorkIQ releases, alongside the other plugins.
📦 Alternative: Standalone MCP Installation
If you prefer to run WorkIQ as a standalone MCP server:
This separate CLI-backed integration is not the hosted workiq plugin, does
not load its skill instructions by itself, and does not inherit the plugin's
version. The following Node.js/NPX commands apply to the CLI.
# Install globally
npm install -g @microsoft/workiq
# Run the MCP server
workiq mcp
Or use npx without installing:
npx -y @microsoft/workiq mcp
Or add it as an MCP server in your coding agent or IDE:
{
"workiq": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@microsoft/workiq@latest", "mcp"],
"tools": ["*"]
}
}
Note: please refer to use MCP servers in VS Code for the configuration instructions relative to Visual Studio Code.
Updating
If you installed WorkIQ globally with npm, run the following command to update to the latest version:
npm update -g @microsoft/workiq
To verify the installed version after updating:
workiq version
💡 Using npx? If you run WorkIQ via npx -y @microsoft/workiq mcp, npx automatically fetches the latest version each time, so no manual update step is needed.
